Editor’s Note: For customers who are opposed to the installation of advanced meters at their residence or business, DTE has submitted an opt-out program to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). This is the state’s governing agency for utilities. Once the MPSC approves the opt-out program, the agency will set an implementation timeline for DTE. As more information becomes available, it will be shared with our customers.

Advanced meters (or “smart” meters as our customers may know them) are a hot topic right now. WE DTE knows that, but wants to help clarify some information for customers.

DTE Energy is updating the electric system in Southeastern Michigan by installing new and upgraded meters, which include technology that allows for two-way communication of energy use and billing data between your home or business and DTE. Your energy use is recorded each day and sent to DTE over a secure communication network.

So how can you benefit?

  • Access to energy usage information – Register online at dteenergy.com to find out how much energy you’re using on a daily or even hourly basis.
  • Automatic power outage detection – The new system makes it easier for DTE to quickly locate and reduce the length of power outages. But, you should still call us at 800-477-4747 or report your outage using our mobile app or website so that you can receive a restoration estimate.
  • Fewer estimated bills – 99 percent of customers with advanced meters receive bills based on actual, not estimated use.
